Queer in Art: Community Engagement and Collecting
Sunday, 10 September, 4:00 – 5:00 pm
venue: das weisse haus
Open event – limited capacity (max. 60 people). Free of charge.
Due to socio-political and cultural developments at the end of the 20th century, open queerness has become an essential factor in contemporary art and cultural production. Yet queer art is often excluded from the hegemonic art market, which is Western, white, and male-dominated, and relegated to the “closet” of subculture.
This talk will discuss strategies for collectors to use their passion for collecting, as well as private exhibition projects (e.g. salons), to bring queer art to a wider audience and thus engage with the community. Other topics include: What different concepts can be behind a queer collection? How can a queer collection be built, or how can an existing collection be queered?
Moderated by Michael Kaufmann (Co-Founder and Curator Queer Art Spaces Vienna, Director Galerie Ernst Hilger, Vienna, AT)
