The exhibition is dedicated to the generous donation of 100 outstanding and trend-setting works on paper by Georg Baselitz to the Albertina and the Morgan Library in New York. The selection of works shows his search for a new method of representation, which had a major impact on art history after 1945, by freeing himself from the representational motif and concentrating on the fundamental questions about pictorial design. The retrospective selection includes early to recent works and emphasises the importance of drawing in the oeuvre.

Albertina Modern

The Albertina modern, a branch of the world-famous Albertina, occupies around 2,500 m² in the completely renovated Künstlerhaus. The most important collection of Austrian art after 1945, the Essl Collection and the Jablonka Collection form the foundation of the new art hot spot.

From May through September, an extensive contemporary sculpture project complements the Baroque sculpture program at the Belvedere’s three locations. Site-specific as well as existing works by international and local artists will connect all of the museum’s gardens along a path, highlighting how the gardens organically grew into an ensemble.

This year’s summer exhibition at the Heidi Horten Collection invites you to rendezvous with artists from the collection whose lives were touched by France; the exhibition follows them there to places representing a significant stage in their artistic development.  Taken together, the importance of Paris is reflected – but also that of the Midi, the south of France — as catalyst and breeding ground for the emergence and dissemination of significant art movements of the twentieth century.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

The Kunsthistorisches Museum was built near the Hofburg to house the extensive collections of the imperial family. With its collection of important works and the world’s largest Bruegel collection, it is today one of the most important art collections in the world.

Colourful surfaces, irregular shapes, often overgrown with rampant greenery: this is how the painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) not only gave Vienna’s architecture new impulses, but also created an exhibition centre that offers a Hundertwasser work exhibition as well as changing exhibitions of exciting contemporary art.

The Künstlerhaus was built on Karlsplatz in 1868. The Künstlerhaus has shone in new splendor since 2020 and shows that it remains a vibrant center of Vienna’s cultural landscape to this day. Apart from the traditional exhibition house, the Künstlerhausverein founded in 1861 also accommodates the “Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus”.

MAK – Museum für angewandte Kunst

Design is one of the main features of MAK. The museum shows furniture, glass, china, silver, and textiles from the Middle Ages to the present day. Precious crafts from the Wiener Werkstätte, bentwood furniture by Thonet and art nouveau highlights such as the gilded design of Gustav Klimt for the frieze of the Stoclet Palais in Brussels.

Sigmund Freud Museum

Vienna’s most famous address opened its doors again in 2020 after 18 months of refurbishment and remodeling. The rooms in which Sigmund Freud lived and worked have been turned into an exhibition object in the freshly renovated museum. This new approach lets us rediscover the founding father of psychoanalysis. We’re sure that Freud would have enjoyed it.

Arnulf Rainer Museum

The Arnulf Rainer Museum combines an architectural gem with the works of the world-renowned contemporary artist Arnulf Rainer. The clearly structured building of the Frauenbad from 1821 – located on the site of the former Frauenkirche – is based on a design by Charles de Moreau, one of the leading architects of French classicism. After the baths ceased operating in 1973, the building was used as a supra-regional exhibition centre. The opening exhibition in autumn 1977 was a retrospective of Arnulf Rainer’s work. In 2006, the decision was made to dedicate the exhibition centre as a museum to Arnulf Rainer, who was born in Baden. The Arnulf Rainer Museum, adapted to the highest technical and aesthetic standards, was opened in 2009.

Kunsthalle Krems

The Kunsthalle Krems is the international exhibition house for contemporary art in Lower Austria. Art after 1945 is shown, with a focus on the contemporary. Kunsthalle Krems is regarded as an institution that offers both established and up-and-coming young positions from Austria and abroad a major platform on which innovative, cross-media, socially topical and art-specific contributions are negotiated. These presentations take the form of comprehensive thematic and solo exhibitions. In addition, there are exhibitions of private collections of modern and contemporary art. The medial orientation ranges from classical disciplines such as painting, drawing and sculpture to photography, video, film and performance to installation and other conceptual as well as new media disciplines.

museum gugging

Since 2006, museum gugging has been presenting the oeuvre of artists from Gugging who have been among the most important representatives of Art Brut since the 1970s. Their works form the foundation of the museum and document the essential positions of artistic creation in Gugging. In addition, the museum shows international Art Brut as well as works of other art movements from important private and public collections.
