Meet Abaseh Mirvali
Introducing the New Artistic Director of viennacontemporary

With Abaseh Mirvali, an internationally renowned curator, cultural strategist, and museum leader joins viennacontemporary. With a global career spanning over two decades and regions—from Latin America to Europe, the U.S., and the Middle East—Mirvali brings a unique mix of institutional experience, curatorial innovation, and strategic insight to Austria’s leading contemporary art fair.
“My approach to leading viennacontemporary is grounded in strategy, collaboration, and a deep respect for the cultural and civic landscape of Vienna and Austria. I see this as an opportunity to strengthen institutional partnerships, deepen regional engagement, and expand our relevance internationally” says Mirvali. “I look forward to working closely with the team and our stakeholders and the cultural community at large to shape a program and platform that is rigorous, dynamic, and forward-looking.”
A Career Driven by Purpose and Collaboration
Mirvali has held leading roles at some of the most respected institutions in the contemporary art world. She directed Fundación/Colección Jumex Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City, served as Executive Director, Chief Curator, and CEO of the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, and led the Biennial of the Americas.
Beyond museums, she has contributed to major fairs and initiatives such as ArteBA, Artissima, miart, and Art Basel, helping shape platforms that elevate emerging artists while connecting them to global audiences. Her work is defined by civic engagement, cultural relevance, and a commitment to inclusive curatorial practices.
Vienna as a Point of Connection
Despite her international scope, Vienna has long been a meaningful part of Mirvali’s professional development. She first engaged with the city through curated by, and later curated Solo Expanded at viennacontemporary —a section dedicated to fostering cross-cultural dialogue between up-and-coming and established practices.
She continues to be a strong advocate for Viennese and Austrian artists and institutions on the global stage, working to bring their voices into wider conversations and networks.
What’s Next for viennacontemporary?
Mirvali is already shaping the upcoming 11th edition of the fair. Her vision: to build a dynamic, collaborative, and forward-looking platform that places Austria firmly on the international art calendar and brings the region’s rich creative potential into the spotlight.
