illy Award 2015

The beauty of a perfect work of art is comparable to the enjoyment of a cup of excellent coffee. Over twenty years ago, the Italian coffee company illycaffè recognised this common ground between the worlds of art and coffee and, as a natural consequence, decided to make an active contribution to popularising contemporary art. Since then, illy has been supporting international art fairs and art projects – and moreover initiated the illy Art Collection: Over the years, renowned artists like Michelangelo Pistoletto, Marina Abramović or Yoko Ono have designed more than 70 series for this unique contemporary art collection in the form of illy espresso cups (since 2006, the project also extends to illy coffee cans).

On the occasion of this year’s viennacontemporary, which illy is participating in already for the fifth time, a co-operation between illy, the University of Applied Arts Vienna and viennacontemporary has inspired a special project focusing on the illy coffee can. The outcome will be on view at the illy fair booth (F06) until 27 September.

Between April and May 2015, more than one hundred degree students of the University of Applied Arts Vienna submitted their ideas for a competition organised by illy to design a new coffee can for the Trieste-based company. The suggestions put forward by the ten finalists (including the winning entry by Dasha Zaichanka) are exhibited at the illy fair booth. The illy Art Collection can by Dasha Zaichanka was moreover produced as a 250-gram illy coffee can and will be available for purchase from 1 October 2015.
